Dr. David McKalip

Dr. McKalip is the Immediate Past President of the Florida Neurosurgical Society, he serves on the Board of the Florida Medical Association (FMA) and has served on the Florida Delegation to the AMA’s key policy making body, the House of Delegates. He served as an officer of the Pinellas County Medical Association for three years and on the Board for eight years. He served as the Chairman of the Council on Medical Economics for the FMA and lead the effort to write a health system reform plan for the FMA that focuses on individual financial empowerment of patients. Dr. McKalip founded Doctors for Patient Freedom and is working to ensure that individual savings, choice and competition create better and more affordable medical care for Americans.  Dr. McKalip has written and spoken on the unintended consequences of expanded government and corporate control of health care financing and medical decision making including rationing, cookbook medicine, unsustainable economic models for government and unaffordable or unavailable private insurance products and financing options for patients.

He received his B.S. in Biology, Cum Laude from the University of South Florida in 1987 and then attended the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine, receiving his M.D. degree in 1991. After a general surgery internship at the University of South Florida, he trained in the neurosurgery residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill from 1992 to 1998. He served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and served there from 1998-2000. While at UCSF he was the Co-Director of Neurotrauma at San Francisco General Hospital where he was actively involved in clinical neurotrauma research. He joined the neurosurgical practice of Casey Gaines, Jeffrey Walker and Rosario Musella in September 2000 in St. Petersburg and has been appointed to the Clinical faculty of the University of South Florida Department of Neurological Surgery.

Dr. McKalip serves on the St. Petersburg Metropolitan Medical Response System, a preparedness committee for terrorist use of weapons of mass destruction. He also serves on the States Domestic Security Task Force.

Dr. McKalip s a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), and American Medical Association. Dr. McKalip has authored several book chapters and research articles, has received several research grants and lectures regularly at national meetings.

Dr. McKalip is on the clinical staff at Bayfront Medical Center, St. Anthony’s Hospital, and Edward White Hospital. He is experienced in all aspects of surgical and critical care management of patients with neurological disease of the brain, spine and peripheral nervous system. Dr. McKalip has extensive experience with the latest image guided techniques in neurological surgery and performs complex instrumentation and fusion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. He looks forward to serving the local community by providing compassionate, state-of-the-art care for patients requiring surgical and critical care management of the brain, peripheral nerves and spine.
