David McKalip, M.D., is a highly respected neurologic specialist who brings an understanding of many medical disciplines to his medical and surgical practice. Dr. McKalip has been practicing neurosurgery in Cartersville since early 2020. Prior to that Dr practiced continuously for 18 years in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.
He cares for patients at Piedmont Cartersville Hospital with emergency neurologic conditions.
Dr. McKalip practiced surgery for nearly 30 years, but ceased performing surgery in 2026. This has allowed him the time to expand neurology services in north Georgia. Specialized medical care for patients with neurological disorders is hard to find in the region, taking up to a year to see a neurologist.
Dr. McKalip is now helping the area by offering evaluation and management for headaches, stroke, tremors, dementia and much more. In addition, Dr. McKalip still manages neurosurgical issues with the brain and spine that do not need surgery. When needed, Dr. McKalip can usually get you into see a more specialized neurologist or neurologic specialist more quickly. When brain or spine surgery is needed, Dr. McKalip refers to trusted surgical colleagues.
Dr. McKalip brings compassionate care to patients. He provides the time you need so he can listen to your medical history and work together to reach the correct diagnosis. He then works with you, your primary care doctor and other specialists to find the right treatment plan.
Training
A graduate of the University of South Florida (1987 B.S. in Biology, Cum Laude) Dr. McKalip then attended the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine, receiving his M.D. degree in 1991. After a general surgery internship at the University of South Florida, he trained in the neurosurgery residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill from 1992 to 1998.
He served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF from 1998-2000). While at UCSF he was the Co-Director of Neurotrauma at San Francisco General Hospital where he was actively involved in clinical neurotrauma research.
Practice History
Returning to St. Petersburg, Florida he started his private practice in September 2000. As a resident of St. Petersburg, he was an active member and leader in the community and served on the Clinical faculty of the University of South Florida Department of Neurological Surgery.
Dr. McKalip is a Past President of the Florida Neurosurgical Society. He served on the Board of the Florida Medical Association (FMA) and has served on the Florida Delegation to the AMA’s key policy making body, the House of Delegates.
He is past President of the Florida Chapter of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. McKalip is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. McKalip remains involved in serving the community and is a Christian who is active in his church. He enjoys playing music with the Etowah Jazz Society. He remains married to his college Sweetheart and they have three adult children.
